Who turned the clock?

Every year again and to be exact twice a year the clock has to be changed. In March we change our clocks to the so-called summer time and in October back to the winter time. Although an incredible number of people in the EU voted for the abolition of the time change, we changed over to winter time again last October. Every year, however, big question marks form over people’s heads. Let us put our clocks forward or back and how do we remember that? An easy trick: In summer we put the garden furniture in front of the door and in winter we get the garden furniture back. This means that in summer we put the hand in front of the door, while in winter we turn it back an hour. Very simple. Nevertheless, the change is annoying and many people reject the half-yearly back and forth. The changeover always takes place on the last weekend of March or the last weekend of October and many probably don’t know the reasons for the former development. Since the introduction of summer and winter time, the sense and nonsense of this time change has been the subject of controversy. It was introduced more than 100 years ago, in 1916. One important reason for its introduction was to save energy by using daylight more efficiently. And indeed scientific findings confirm that we save electric light in the evening during summer time because it is brighter for longer. At the same time, however, studies also say that more heating costs are produced in the morning. This is especially true during the cold months, of course, and overall energy consumption is even increasing. So what is all this about? In addition, all of us are familiar with the fact that many people have difficulties adapting to the new times. This is especially true for people who already suffer from sleep disorders. An exciting and equally frightening result of scientific studies is, by the way, that time changes from Sunday to Monday take place and that more accidents occur on Monday mornings than on normal Monday mornings. We think it’s crazy.

The next time change will take place on 31 March 2019. Exactly at 2:00 o’clock in the night. The hand then jumps from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. and your night is one hour earlier than planned. Then it is welcome in summer or at least in summer time.

At the same time, it is time to turn your analogue wristwatch with the crown, usually on the right side of the dial, and set the correct time. For the summer time one hour before, while your digital radio alarm clock, the changeover certainly makes by itself. When changing the time, ideally use the opportunity to change the bracelet to summer colors. So why not choose a bold pastel-coloured bracelet to welcome the summer with bright colours.
